The Great Wine Capitals is a global network of cities and regional sharing cultural and economic characteristics: be internationally recognized wine regions. It includes the “old” and “new” world of wine, and was formed in 1998 with the aim of working to promote international wine tourism and create a network of cultural, economic and academic exchanges between nine wine capitals.
As is well known, Mendoza is one of those world capitals of wine, and is adjacent to other important wine regions like Bordeaux (France), San Francisco -Valle Napa (United States), Florence (Italy), Mainz (Germany ), Porto (Portugal), Bilbao and Rioja in Spain, Christchurch in New Zealand, Cape Town (South Africa) and Casablanca in Valparaiso. Since 2006 Mendoza has that honor.
Through this network, the province has been able to grow a lot over the last ten years in terms of dissemination, promotion and marketing wine and create links with other wine-producing countries. In this context it is that the Best of Mendoza’s Wine Tourism Contest, which is awarded to the best tourist experiences related to wine was created. The categories are: lodging, restaurants, sustainable practices, architecture, parks and gardens, art and culture, innovative experiences related to small wineries and wine tourism services.
Awards to important personalities of wine are also provided with the name of Ambassador / a Wine Tourism and Mendoza. These awards are one of the highest and most important events of the wine industry in Mendoza. Both the customer service and the degree of commitment to the overall development of wine tourism evaluate the quality of services as originality in the offer.
