In the El Sosneado district there is a unique attraction, but little known to visitors who want to internalize with San Rafael’s beauties: the Atuel Falls. The district is reached by taking Provincial Route No. 144, then splicing with National Route No. 40, and finally transiting Provincial Route No. 101 until reaching El Sosneado.
There are many guides who know the area and make expeditions to the falls. Most do it on horseback, riding horseback riding to cover the 60 km to the ruins of the thermal hotel, which is well near the border with Chile. It is a journey for the bold who dare to cross the mountain and the cornices of rock.
First you can see the Laguna del Atuel, which is two kilometers long and is supplied by the slopes that form the falls. These are located in the springs of the Atuel River. When you get to the place, you can see the beautiful waterfall that forms the falls. In addition, there are sightings of condors, pumas and guanacos.
Another option is to make the experience of bathing in the hot springs of the wells and the pools, which contain ferruginous waters. The land where the jumps are located has an area of 330 thousand hectares, and there have been attempts to convert it into a Nature Reserve. The falls impress because they are the only ones of their kind in this part of the country, where the mountains and meltwater rivers predominate.
