Other points of attraction located in southern Mendoza are the towns of: Villa 25 de Mayo, Dique Galileo Vitali, El Tigre Dam, Los Reyunos Reservoir and Agua del Toro.
They are accessed by National Route 143, through a route of 196 km of asphalt roads without stretches of cornice, with consolidated sections. This circuit demands a whole day and is operable throughout the year. It has places to supply fuel in the city of San Rafael and in Villa 25 de Mayo.
Leaving the city of San Rafael for National Route 143 (Avenida Hipolito Yrigoyen to the West) to thirteen kilometers, is the roundabout of Christ, turn left and Provincial Route 150, you access Villa 25 de Mayo, the first historic town of San Rafael, an authentic place of relaxation and silence that still preserves adobe farmhouses and streets flanked by immense and ancient poplars. There are the Ruins of Fort San Rafael del Diamante (National Historical Monument, ordered to be built by the viceroy Sobremonte in 1805), in front of it, the Historical Museum “Narciso Morales” treasures the pieces of that time. In the vicinity you can see the first Chapel of Our Lady of Carmen, provincial historical monument and the Plaza Centenario in honor of the pioneers.
A short distance away is the Galileo Vitali Dam, the first work built on the Diamante River to take advantage of its waters for artificial irrigation.
Continuing west along the aforementioned route, one kilometer from the Vital dam, you can access on the left, the road that leads to the El Tigre dam, a compensating dam whose water content is recovered by pumping to the Los Reyunos power plant. This has services of cabins, camping, only place suitable for fly fishing.
Continuing the circuit we find the reservoir of Los Reyunos, whose wall that in addition to retaining the waters of the Diamante River, has special characteristics since stone materials were used, compacted with clay, which allowed a simple and minimal cost execution; its height reaches 134 m. and it is crowned by a viewpoint. Its impressive dike forms a lake of 734 hectares, there is sowing of fingerlings, which generates good fishing for salmonids, silversides and trout. In the surroundings, adventure tourism is practiced: horseback riding, mountain biking, trekking, quads, hiking, among others.
Returning Provincial Route 150, to the West, sixty-three kilometers from the entrance to the previous places, in the picturesque landscape of the Canyon formed by the Diamante River; The Agua del Toro Reservoir, the second in the province due to its size, is distinguished by its double-curved arc-shaped wall, one hundred and three meters high, whose size astonishes the tourist. Its main function is to generate hydroelectricity and irrigate areas of the Southern oasis. On the south shore of the lake, is the Diamante Volcano, suitable for mountaineering and with a footprint to the summit for all-terrain vehicles.
In the lake, rainbow trout and large perch swarm, reason why this site is preferred by fishermen. Fishing, diving, and other water sports are practiced, mainly sailing, rowing, motor boating, diving and windsurfing.
Because the area does not have services, it is necessary to resort to the closest bases of Los Reyunos or Villa 25 de Mayo, and of course take precautions in the practice of activities. The return is made through the same routes.
