The museum is the result of the need to exhibit and preserve the archeological remains found between 1.989 and 1.991 after the excavations made in the old city hall of Mendoza and the consecutive constructions done in the same place through time. At the same time, it is a centre where cultural activities from the historic centre of the city take place. In the surrounding areas there are other historic constructions that have been excavated and are now exhibited: the old fountain in the square and the remains from the ex Jesuit convent and church known now as San Francisco Ruins.
