Located in the El Nihuil district, the Salinas del Diamante are a National Protected Area of the province of Mendoza. It is a huge open pit salt mine, located 60 km from the city of San Rafael and between it and Malargüe, so it can be accessed via route 144.
At the beginning of 2015, income was enabled for the general public, after 129 years of operation. In order to make the tourist exploitation of the place more viable, a Salt Museum was installed, which functions as an information point for all the people who want to visit the Salinas. It has historical data of the place, in addition to salts from different salt mines in the world. (featured paragraph)
In addition, in the place you can buy tourist products related to salt, such as salts flavored with local herbs, lemon, thyme, chimichurri or with traditional spices. You can also buy bath salts for thermal baths. Since the opening of the Salinas had a very good reception among visitors, it is planned to exploit astrotourism in the place, since it has optimal conditions to make visualizations thanks to the saline, and there is the possibility (in the future) of making trips in hot air balloon.
Both at the entrance to the museum and in the immediate vicinity of the saline there are machines that were formerly used to extract the mineral. The place remains open during the summer, long weekends, Easter and winter holidays.
