The Ministry of Environment of Mendoza and the Research Institute of Arid Zones (IADIZA) signed a cooperation agreement to strengthen conservation and promoting sustainable development in the Reserve Ñacuñán. The environment secretary, Guillermo Carmona, and director of the Scientific and Technological Center in Mendoza CONICET (CCT), Sergio Roig signed an agreement that will frame the work developed together two agencies Ñacuñán Reserve. The agreement aims to make a joint effort between the two institutions to strengthen conservation and promote sustainable development of the Reserve. Through this agreement the Ministry of Environment IADIZA awarded to a grant of $ 50,000 to carry out this project. Researchers at the institute CONICET Drylands participate in various programs conducted by the environmental area of the Province. The Carmona secretary stressed that one of the cornerstones of the work performed together two institutions is the management of protected natural areas. The Biosphere Reserve Ñacuñán sector preserves a carob forests in the province. The closing grazing and logging ban for over thirty years have allowed the recovery of forest and ecosystem. Ñacuñán is the only protected area in the province that holds the international status of Biosphere Reserve, conducted by the IADIZA. Its importance is that it serves as a refuge for native wildlife and allows the nesting of endangered bird species. It also has a vital role to reduce the effects of desertification, preserving the ecosystem for future generations. The greatest threat facing the Reserve is the occurrence of a wildfire that threatens the ecosystem and safety of the residents. Therefore, the agreement signed IADIZA Environment and involves the Provincial Fire Plan is a program of fire prevention in rural areas whose main objective is to know, through technical studies, the behavior of fire in our natural systems.
